Daily Internet Fix: July 20

Food for thought:

Today’s edition of the Knight Science Journalism Tracker does an excellent job of rounding up the various articles and special sections about Apollo 11 that have run these past few days. In addition, the tracker asks: with all the coverage happening during this anniversary, how can we top it for the 50th anniversary? Is it smart to go this far out this time?

Tonight I’m focusing on some of the events going on in and around D.C. during the next couple of days:

Daily Internet Fix: July 17

Food for thought:

  • Legendary newscaster Walter Cronkite — known in part for his excellent TV coverage of the Apollo program, particularly Apollo 11 – died July 16 at age 92. A number of tributes are making their way through the media, including this one from the New Jersey Star-Ledger pointing out his forced retirement kept his legend strong.
  • The spookiest image I’ve seen in a while: tire tracks from the Apollo 14 handcart, visible in one of the new pictures the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter took of the manned moon landing sites.
  • And it looks like the Apollo 11 crew will meet with yet another American president this weekend. My question: how many heads of state have they met over the years? (I’m thinking of that large, many-months-long world tour they had after landing in particular.) 100?
